KEY POINTS

A total of 132.6 million tonnes of oil was produced  in 1998 (see Chapter 8 and Appendix 6)
A total of 95.6 billion cubic metres of gas was produced in 1998 (see Chapter 8 and Appendix 7)
Oil and gas production accounted for some 1.7% of the UK’s Gross Value Added in 1998 (see Chapter 2)
Total income of the oil and gas sector was some £17 billion in 1998/99 (see Chapter 2)
Government revenue from the oil and gas sector is estimated at some £2.6 billion in 1998/1999 (see Chapter 2)
Investment in the sector rose to some £5.1 billion in 1998 (from £4.4 billion in 1997). Including investment in Exploration and Appraisal, it formed around 17 per cent of total UK industrial investment, and just over 4 per cent of gross fixed capital investment (see Chapter 2)
