FRONT COVER

The front cover picture shows the offshore production facilities for the Shearwater gas condensate field in the Central North Sea. This picture was kindly provided by Shell U.K. Exploration and Production, operator of the field, on behalf of its co-venturers Shell U.K., ExxonMobil and BP Amoco. The 11,600 tonne deck, fabricated at the AMEC yard in Wallsend, was towed offshore in March and lifted in place by the Heerema crane barge Thialf, setting a new record for the heaviest North Sea lift.

Total expenditure on the Shearwater project is estimated at £876 million, some 70% of which has been spent in the UK. Shearwater facilities are designed for production rates of 410 million standard cubic feet of gas per day and 90,000 barrels per day of condensate. Estimated recoverable reserves are around 844 billion standard cubic feet of gas and 159 million barrels of condensate and liquids. Production is expected to commence this summer.
