FRONT COVER
The front cover photograph shows the Dunbar platform with the Sedco 706 drilling rig alongside. The picture was kindly provided by TotalFinaElf, operator of the field. Discovered in 1973 and located some 420 kilometres north east of Aberdeen in block 3/14a, Dunbar is a medium-sized oil field which began production in 1994. Average daily production during 2000 was some 35,000 barrels of oil and around 3.3 million cubic meters of gas. Dunbar is representative of a number of fields currently in production on the UK Continental Shelf, as it exploits the infrastructure available and itself acts as host to other nearby smaller satellite fields (Ellon and Grant). Dunbar has a remaining field life of some 18 years, with potential for this to be extended, dependant on use of technology to enhance oil recovery both within the field and from surrounding areas.
As one of the major players on the UKCS, TotalFinaElf have shown renewed commitment to North Sea, recently moving forward with other projects including the Elgin/Franklin gas condensate field and the Nuggets development. Elgin/Franklin is a significant achievement, with total expenditure amounting to some £1.65 billion. More information on this project and other field highlights can be found in Chapter 2.
